I-Beams (named because of their shape) provide great load-bearing support.

I-Beams or American Standard Shape I-Beams, like the one shown left, have tapered flanges for added strength. Dimensions and tolerances are standardized per the ASTM A36 (American Society for Testing and Materials General Requirements Standard Specification for Carbon Structural Steel).
